Priests have a role in enforcing religious doctrine but also in being "spiritual advisors". Its a nod to the idea that there is an emotional side to life that is significant to individuals and communities. What would be a more secular name for a person who looked to helping individuals and communities with shaping their lives toward more positive emotional ends? They may even be charged with formulating system change ideas that help to produce the desired effects (joy, excitement, companionship, drive, curiosity) or remove processes that push toward darker feelings (despair, anxiety, anger, confusion, dogma).
